As an exploration of the good and evil existing in everyone, as well as a debate on due process versus vigilantism, there isn't much in the way of a clear-cut positive message. In this version of BatmanBruce Wayne comes out of retirement to help not so much because he wants to, but because he feels he has no choice as Gotham City sinks further into crime and decadence. Graphic animated violence abounds. Extended fight scenes -- with punching, kicking, stabbing, and eye-gouging. Knife-wielding "mutant" gangs constantly talk of "slicing and dicing" citizens.

In a flashback, a boy watches as his parents are murdered in an alley; there's a shot of the parents on their backs in the alley, dying and bloody. During a race, a car spins out of control and crashes.

A teenage girl continually overhears adults in her apartment talking like extremely parodied examples of burnt-out old hippies who talk about tripping, getting high, and memory lapses. Parents and caregivers: Set limits for violence and more with Plus.

Based on the Frank Miller graphic novel, this Batman is a reflection of a mid-'80s vigilantism mindset as exemplified by Dirty Harry, Rambo, and so many other "tough guy gets even" movies from that era.

Even compared to recent Batman films, this one is more violent, even if it's animated. The story is dark, and the complexities of the characters and the violence make it inappropriate for younger viewers. But for teens and parents ready for a superhero story with ambiguity, this is one worth seeing. Join now. Add your rating See all 4 parent reviews. Add your rating See all 13 kid reviews. He's trying to stay retired, but as Gotham City continues its descent into violence, crime, and decadence, he's finding it harder and harder to remain a civilian who's content to spend the rest of his middle-aged days driving his race car.

A crime gang known as The Mutants are terrorizing innocent citizens at every turn, and if that wasn't bad enough, Harvey Dent aka Two-Face has been released from jail thanks to a plastic surgeon and a coddling psychiatrist.

With this turn of events, Wayne becomes Batman once again, and as he fights The Mutants and starts to bring about a drop in Gotham's crime, once again, citizens and the media are torn as to whether or not Batman's brand of justice is right or wrong. In some ways, with the steady media debate raging as a counterpoint to Batman's crime fighting, this could be seen as a satire of contemporary urban life.

The only quibble with this is that the contemporary urban life being satired feels like it's stuck inwhere the '80s action movie mentality reigns -- where tough guy Dirty Harry-types shoot first and ask questions later, rule of law and due process be damned. Nonetheless, the complexities of the characters themselves transcends some of these more dated elements, making this an enjoyable, if extremely violent, experience.

Families can talk about Batman. How has the Batman character evolved over the years? What has remained unchanged about his basic story? In short, it was Miller who put the "dark" into The Dark Knight. Does the animated version live up to its legendary comic book source material?

Or is Miller's graphic novel too complex and twisted for the cartoon world?

Skeptics should rest easy, as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 is a rousing success in many ways, and easily conquers its own faults by delivering a Batman movie experience that is unlike any other. The story centers on a fifty-five-year-old Bruce Wayne, now forcibly retired from Batman duty as the result of a national crackdown on superhero vigilantes. Disgruntled and swimming in booze, Wayne floats through Gotham's streets, watching complacently as the city falls to savagery and crime - thanks in large part to a gang of psychotic young punks who call themselves The Mutants.

As Gotham City darkens, Bruce begins to feel an old presence rising from the depths inside him - and when one of his old foes returns to commit a brazen string of crimes, Batman can be abated no longer. Before he fully knows it, Bruce is back in costume and unleashing punishing justice to the criminal lot of Gotham; but the Mutants and their ferocious leader are a new breed of criminal - one that even Batman may not be able to best.

Oliva and Goodman stick like glue to Miller's comic, which is probably the smartest move they could make. That complexity reamins intact, as do many of the comedic moments that come from transitions between the actions of the principal characters and the often-satirical commentary of the news broadcasts. Like in the comics, these peripheral characters and moments expand the scope of the story, transforming it into a larger rumination on Batman as an icon and symbol, instead of it just being a story about an aging Batman trying to get his groove back.

The broadcasts also frame the story and pacing of the film, allowing Oliva and Goodman to delve into important scenes, while using broadcast exposition to move us through new developments easily and clearly. Although the comic version relied a great deal on Batman's internal monologue, the filmmakers avoid that path and fill any gaps in understanding through the use of visual implication or supporting characters putting certain matters to voice.

This is a story in which we first got a truly frightening image of Batman as a violent, obsessive, semi-psychotic vigilante, and that's exactly what we get in this animated film. A big point of contention with this particular project will be the look of it: Miller's graphic novel was illustrated in his distinctly dirty, chaotic, scribbly style, which doesn't lend itself well to modern animation.

Iconic moments from the comics are lovingly recreated in the film, and in general, the Blu-ray visuals alone are worth the price of purchase. Such moments include Batman's confrontation with a corrupt military official, as well as the action sequences and set pieces, which are staged in exciting, often brutal, and totally Batman-esque fashion by Oliva.

The voice acting is, for the most part, spot on. A nice casting choice. Dark, gritty tone, iconic character designs and imagery, thrilling Batman-style action and all the subtext, social-relevancy and multi-faceted story pieces from Miller's comics? Yep, it's all accounted for.Facing the downside of middle age, a restless Bruce Wayne pacifies his frustration with racecars and liquor — but the Bat still beckons as he watches his city fall prey to gangs of barbaric criminals known as The Mutants.

While this new animation will likely be a bit more toned down from the original comic book story, it looks pretty sweet nonetheless. I really dig the animation style here and it is up to the standards we have come to expect from DC Animation.

Batman has not been seen for ten years. A new breed of criminal ravages Gotham City, forcing year-old Bruce Wayne back into the cape and cowl.

But, does he still have what it takes to fight crime in a new era? One of the most beloved Batman tales finally gets the animation treatment. So influential was Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" that it inspired Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan when they were crafting their live action Batman movies, as well as the s Batman animated series which gave birth to an entire universe of DC animated shows.

Warner decided to split the tale, originally spread over 4 issues, into 2 movies. Turns out that it was an excellent decision which not only successfully adapted the first half of Frank Miller's epic, but added layers to the story and characters that the limited page count of the graphic novel could not leave in. Rarely does an adaptation surpass the original source material.

But Dark Knight Returns part 1 is just such an example of an animated movie that is not only true to its source material, but expands upon it. The original was great; the animated adaptation makes it better. It has been years since Batman went into retirement.

Billionaire Bruce Wayne now drifts from day to day hoping that the people of Gotham can take care of themselves. But now, a new threat emerges: The Mutants. A vast gang of street thugs led by their grotesque but incredibly strong and savage leader.

Despite his age, Bruce is forced to become Batman once again to save his city. But can the aging crime fighter stand up to a threat that is faster, stronger and more powerful than he has ever been?

And what happens when Batman comes face to face with his old nemesis Two-Face? Beyond the narrative lies a thorough deconstruction of the Batman character, especially when played opposite the two main villains, Two Face and the Mutant Leader.

Both villains serve as a dark reflection of Batman himself. Like Two Face, Bruce Wayne and Batman are presented as two separate personalities fighting for control. But is Batman truly just a mask Bruce wears? Or is it the other way around? And as for the mutant leader, both he and Batman operate as a symbol to inspire others to action.

One a symbol of chaos and crime, the other a symbol of hope and justice. But if the mutant leader's extreme acts can rouse Batman to return to vigilantism, so too can Batman's actions rouse criminals to return to their old ways as one character claims in the story.

The characters are brought to life by a fine voice cast who nail their roles perfectly. Peter Weller of Robocop fame takes the role of Batman; a role that may comes across as a monotone baritone at first. But Weller infuses Batman's voice with nuance and subtlety which fits the character well.

The only downside is that despite wanting to show a dichotomy between Batman and Bruce Wayne, Weller uses the same tone of voice throughout the whole movie; Compared to previous voice actors, like Kevin Conroy, who used different speech patterns and tones for Wayne and Batman.Whether through comics, e-book comics, superheroes movies or animated superheroes movies, DC comics has won the heart of millions of people by entertaining them in all these platforms with fantasy, thriller, sci-fi stories and movies.

So, it makes a perfect continuation.
